THE THYROID GLAND

The thyroid is a butterfly shaped gland wrapped around the trachea [wind pipe] at the base of the throat. It is controlled by and reciprocates with the hypothalamus and pituitary glands. The thyroid synthesises T4, also called thyroxin, which contains 4 atoms of iodine in its molecular structure. The liver, kidneys, heart and muscles convert T4, with adequate cortisol, into T3 or tri-iodo-thyronine, the ‘active’ thyroid hormone.

In order for the body to synthesize T4 and convert then it into T3, at the metabolic proportions required, there needs to be an adequate supply of the various nutrients, such as: iodine, zinc, ‘B’ vitamins, macro and trace minerals, and the amino acid tyrosine, and quite probably taurine and glutamine.

Thyroid hormone influences the metabolic activity [cellular oxidation or fuel burning in the cell] of essentially every organ, tissue and cell in the body. It affects heart rate, body weight, energy level, muscle strength, skin condition, vision, menstrual regularity, PMS, bleeding tendency, mental state, cholesterol levels, body temperature, immune function, brain development and growth in the foetus and in children.

Blood Tests for thyroid function

The late Dr. Broda Barnes, the accepted emeritus expert on thyroid, stated that temperature was a more accurate diagnosis of thyroid function than the highly insensitive blood tests. Dr. George Goodheart DC, introduced kinesiological testing. This form of testing, when combined with temperature readings, symptom analysis and the ankle clonus test, will avoid the confusion of “Wilson’s Syndrome”, which often arises during "conventional" diagnosis.

This predicament of “normal” blood tests but overt symptoms of thyroid dysfunction has baffled many medically trained personnel and resulted in undiagnosed and untreated thyroid dysfunction which has resulted in prolonged fatigue and dysfunctional diseases."Wilson's Syndrome" is essentially the situation where a person exhibits a range of symptoms typical of thyroid dysfunction yet comes out clear on a conventional blood test.

Causative Factors in Thyroid Disorders

There are a range of circumstance that can cause the thyroid to no longer function normally.

  1. Deficiencies of: iodine, ‘B’ vitamins, macro and trace minerals, the amino acid tyrosine, possibly taurine and glutamine and Vitamins A-C-E in hyperthyroid.
  2. Soy isoflavones (found in most soy products) - are potent thyroid inhibitors
  3. Raw brassicas - broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, brussels sprouts
  4. Agricultural spray residues and added chemicals on and in food
  5. Chlorine / fluorides in water [as well as the myriad of other water treatments]
  6. Antibodies formed from inflammation caused by viruses, bacteria, yeast, flukes, and parasites which can cause auto-immune activity that ultimately destroys thyroid tissues.
  7. Medical mutilation; i.e.. surgery, RAI [radio-active iodine], suppressive drugs
  8. Many [most] drugs, including synthetic thyroid, suppress thyroid function
  9. Radiation from nuclear plants, high power lines, microwaves, TV’s, computers, water beds, electric blankets, some electrical appliances, all affect thyroid.
  10. Endotoxins from Candida [79 distinct toxins], toxic intestines, IBS, leaky gut. Candida induces a 2000% increase in IgE antibodies resulting in allergies, fatigue, and many common symptom complexes which may be misconstrued as emotional or depressive.
  11. Estrogen dominance suppresses thyroid function and predisposes one to cancer.
  12. Heavy metals such as mercury [amalgam tooth fillings], cadmium, iron.

THYRODINE
(the potential answer for many)

Thyrodine is a combination of biological nutrients that supply the raw materials required for optimum thyroid function. Thyrodine consists of a unique bio-available form of iodine in a very exacting quantity combined with zinc, B vitamins, magnesium, selenium, potassium, manganese, boron, trace and rare elements; Glutamine, Taurine and Tyrosine.

Thyrodine was originally developed and used in a naturopathic and natural medicine clinic in New Zealand for over 25 years. It is now being utilized in a number of other naturopathic, chiropractic, osteopathic and medical practices throughout the world. We have consistently witnessed a dysfunctional thyroid being fully restored to normal by proper use of Thyrodine (when used as part of the Thyroid Regeneration Program) within 2 to 6 months. Positive effects and full function are often experienced in hours to days or weeks. The long term regenerative effect will take longer.

Once the thyroid has been restored to normal, optimal function, it can then be maintained either with ongoing supplemental use of Thyrodine and with kelp and a healthy living diet, which needs to be utilized daily. Whether you continue to include Thyrodine in you diet is up to you. Many people stop taking it after they feel the Thyroid has regenerated whilst some people find it an excellent form of supplement that will help their thyroid stay healthy. In our experience kelp has not been successful in regenerating an inadequately functioning thyroid - only the Thyrodine has been observed to accomplish that. But daily use of kelp will in many cases maintain the regained thyroid function. Remembering that any of the other causes of thyroid dysfunction, on page 2, may need to be addressed as well as supplying the raw materials.

Thyrodine is taken as past of our amazing Thyroid Regeneration Program. You can read more about this program here within this site.

Considerations for those with Thyroid Disorders

In the experience of this clinic, about 80% of women and about 20% of men exhibit varying degrees of thyroid dysfunction. Since thyroid function has such a profound effect upon general health and well being, restoring thyroid function becomes a major therapeutic goal. In our clinic the therapeutic object is to restore thyroid function. It is NOT to “replace” it with synthetics or pig extracts which serve only to suppress the symptoms without addressing the cause of the thyroid disorder.

Under “Causes of Thyroid Disorders” (above) are many factors that may impede thyroid function. It is essential to consider all of these factors and eliminate the thyroid toxins before launching a therapy program to restore thyroid function. Endotoxins from the intestines and various pathogenic organisms contribute heavily to thyroid disorders and need to be addressed as well. This is exactly what the Thyroid Regeneration Program has been developed for. To assist you in eliminating any unwanted pathogens (including viruses, bacteria, parasites, and candida albicans overgrowth)

On the next page we have listed some of the major symptoms that may indicate potential thyroid disorders. Should you experience any of these symptoms, you may choose from any of the health programs that follow to solve your own health problems or you may choose to take this to your naturopath, chiropractor, osteopath or medically trained advisor and request them to obtain Thyrodine and the other natural synergistic supplements for you. [rather than using questionable synthetics].
