It was recently brought to my attention (by a customer) that fucoidan is proving effective in the treatment of Covid-19. Fucoidan is found in (and extracted from) Laminaria japonica (kelp), which is the raw material of Biofilam. Biofilam contains around 6% fucoidan. I’ve done some looking into this, and turned up some very interesting findings.

Here’s a quote from an article in Medical News Today, covering a study on this subject:

New research concludes that extracts from seaweed could be more effective than remdesivir, the current leading SARS-CoV-2 antiviral drug.

The present study looked at three variants of heparin and two related fucoidans — a substance that can be obtained from brown seaweed — to see how effective they would be as decoys for SARS-CoV-2 in a laboratory setting.

The researchers applied the extracts to mammalian cells and measured enough for each one to reduce the effectiveness of the virus by 50%.

The researchers found that one of the fucoidans and two of the heparin extracts required a significantly lower concentration than remdesivir to reduce the virus’s effectiveness to 50%.

Furthermore, when used in high concentrations, a separate test found that none of the extracts showed any cellular toxicity, meaning they were likely to be safe.

A number of studies are accessible on PubMed which also look into the potent anti-viral properties of fucoidan, specifically in relation to SARS-CoV-2 (the virus responsible for Covid-19).

Fucoidan and lung function

On PubMed there is a review study titled, Fucoidan and Lung Function: Value in Viral Infection. Here is a quote from its abstract:

In clinical and animal studies, fucoidans have been shown to increase innate immunity and decrease inflammation. In addition, dietary fucoidan has been shown to attenuate pulmonary damage in a model of acute viral infection. Direct inhibition of SARS-CoV-2 in vitro has been described, but is not universal.

I came across another study titled, Inhibitory activities of marine sulfated polysaccharides against SARS-CoV-2 . Here is a quote from its conclusion:

In summary, 4 sulfated polysaccharides from marine organisms were screened for the activities against SARS-CoV-2, and 3 of them showed significant antiviral activities, including SCSP from sea cucumber, fucoidan from brown algae, and iota-carrageenan.

Biofilam and concentrated fucoidan

You can buy fucoidan in a concentrated form. On request, we sell a product called u-Fn in bulk capsules and bulk powder. At over US$1100 per kg (2.2 lbs), it’s rather expensive, so we only sell it to those who ask. Fucoidan is typically used in the treatment of various forms of cancer, but, as we’re now discovering, it may prove to be beneficial in treating Covid-19. The possibilities are certainly very existing, both in regard to Covid-19 and also the broader anti-viral properties of fucoidan (and Biofilam) in general.

If you’re interested in buying high quality fucoidan, please reach out and ask. Otherwise, you can buy the best priced bulk Biofilam right here on this site.
